Surabaya has a spectacular tourist attraction in Southeast Asia, the Four Faced Buddha monument. This monument got Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) award as The largest Four Faced Buddha monument in Indonesia. This monument height is 9 meters (29,5 feet) and 225 square meters (2,422 sq feet) area.
If it is added up to the height of the dome, this
monument has a height of 36 meters and was officially
opened at November, 9th,
2004, building this statue required a fund of nearly IDR 4 billion.
Built on an area about 1.5 hectares, in the middle there is a
building with a length of 9 meters, a width of 9 meters high and 36
meters (118 feet). There are many elements of
the number 9, because the number 9 has
special meaning for the Buddhist.
The building is surrounded by four green-golden pillars which consists of three parts: the stupa, Buddhist statues and Buddhist throne. This monument and the building is almost similar to the Four Faced Buddha Monument in Thailand, but the stupas in Surabaya is higher and the statue is smaller. All parts of this monument is coated with gold from Thailand as well as with the builder.
PHILOSOPHY
The
statue was also called Dewa Catur Muka (Sanskrit), has four good
senses of Buddha, those are: compassionate, generous, just, and
meditation. Buddhism is a manifestation of compassion to fellow human
beings, to help anyone without discrimination, and faithful in prayer
delivered in the ritual procession. While the eight hand of Buddha
holding holy water, defense weapons, weapon against evil, the book of
scripture, prayer beads, chest, and cupu.
In addition to the statue, there are also four white elephant statue with a height of 4 meters (13 feet) on each corner, three ponds which are decorated with lotus, and a meditation room. The site is also adorned with 12 lights made of bronze and copper.
This place is open to the public, visitor just pay the entrance fee to the Kenjeran Beach Complex, car with 2 passengers only costs IDR 3000.
